英国の小説家であるウィリアム・サマセット・モーム(W. Somerset Maugham：1874-1965)のThe Summing Upから抜粋しよう。この作品は1938年に出版された。私的には好きな作品である。
The Summing Up 第2章
①I have always wondered at the passion many people have to meet the celebrated. ②The prestige you acquire by being able to tell your friends that you know famous men proves only that you are yourself of small account. ③The celebrated develop a technique to deal with the person they come across. ④They show the world a mask, often an impressive one, but take care to conceal their real selves. ⑤They play the part that is expected from them and with practice learn to play it very well, but you are stupid if you think that this public performance of theirs corresponds with the man within.
【直訳】
①私は以前からずっと、多くの人々が持っている有名人に会いたいという情熱に驚いている。
②あなたが友人に有名人を知っていると話せることで得られる名声は、あなた自身(のその言動によってあなた)が取るに足りない人物であると証明しているだけだ。
③有名人は偶然出会う人に対応するための技術を身につけている。
④彼らは世間の人々にある仮面を見せている、たいていは強い印象を与える仮面だが、彼らはしっかりと本当の自分を隠している。
⑤彼らは大衆から期待されている役を演じていて、練習によって上手に役をこなせるようになっているが、もしあなたが彼らが培ってきたこの大衆向けの演技が彼らの内面と一致すると思っているならば、あなたは愚かである。
【解説】
□ have+always+Vp.p.：以前からずっとVp.p.
e.g. I have always wanted to work as a volunteer at the hospital over the weekend.
「私は以前からずっと週末はボランティアとして病院で働きたいと思っていました。」
□ 感情の動詞の例外wonder at X：Xに驚く/Xについて不思議に思う
□ have toではなく、the people have the passion to meet…である。to不定詞の形容詞用法。
□ [人] of {much / little} account：{大切な/取るに足らぬ}人
※再帰代名詞はbe動詞の補語にもなれるが、疑似目的語(fake-object)と捉えて結果構文として解釈しても問題ないような気がする。
□ develop a technique：技術を身につけている
□ the world：世間, 世間の人々
□ their real selves → *real themselves
□ this public performance of theirs：彼らのこの大衆向けの演技
e.g. 限定詞+名詞+of+所有代名詞=所有格＋名詞
(1) My friend came to see me.
(2) A friend of mine came to see me.
(1)は特定の友人を指し、(2)はある不特定の友人を指す傾向にある。したがって、(1)は「私の友人が会いに来た」、(2)は「私のある友人が会いに来た」と訳せる(中原 1973, 150)。
